Contemplative guidance in inner belonging — for individuals and organisations.
Homed Exile is a guide to your inner belonging: a contemplative approach to remembering the Home that is already here, so we can meet the unavoidable realities of life without being wholly governed by them.
Homed Exile offers a tailored approach through which I help you remember – intellectually, emotionally and somatically – your true Home, where inner belonging, peace, freedom, love and wisdom reside. Your life events may continue to happen, but your relationship to them can change.
Through one-to-one sessions, mindfulness and meditation practices, movements, teachings and retreats, I help you remain settled amidst what unsettles you – and gradually loosen the grip that difficult experiences can have on you.
Homed Exile is Anamnesis – the practice of remembering Home.
One-to-one sessions offering a tailored Homed Exile approach, shaped around your own questions, physical abilities, needs and concerns.
Ongoing tailored practices for recognising your inner sense of belonging and for developing more loving, peaceful, and conscious relationship with your body and mind.
Contemplative teachings on the concepts of Home and exile, rooted in mindfulness, meditation and ancient philosophical traditions, made plain for everyday life.
As a team or a person, you bring what is alive for you – a need, a nudge, a question, or a challenging experience. We slow down and watch what is appearing, mentally, emotionally and somatically. Together, through contemplative inquiry, we safely explore what may be creating a sense of exile: what you are identifying with, resisting, fearing, disliking, questioning or trying to change. Through tailored contemplative and embodied practices, you are invited to recognise a space around your experiences and remember what is already present beneath them.
You will learn the practices, take simple ones for ease of use, will have life-time access to personalised guided meditations to listen to at your own convenience and will have once a week after-care support.
It is the experience that something is off, unsettling, or not quite where it should be when it comes to our relationships, work, community, country, body, or even our sense of self.
At its deepest level, Exile is an amnesia of our true Home.
Home is the unconditional, always-already-available awareness — a Being, an inner belonging, contentment, where we can truly settle, a space we do not need to strive for, claim or conquer, but only remember to recognise.
Home is not a place we need to reach. It is remembering where and who we already are.
We all live with these two seemingly contradictory conditions: our exilic realities, and our true Home.
Homed Exile acknowledges the Amnesia and encourages the Anamnesis.
To truly live and enjoy life requires us to learn to relate peacefully to the mind even when it is not peaceful; otherwise, we risk believing every thought and becoming prisoners of it, sleepwalking through life into a cycle of dissatisfactions. In the face of impermanence and unpredictability of life, we need the skills to meet challenging experiences without allowing them to take root. We can learn how to be settled amid unsettling experiences because happiness is when we are homed despite exile. Our true home is where lasting contentment is.
Home is not a place we need to reach. It is remembering where and who we already are.
The aim of Homed Exile is not to escape from or to deny our unsettling realities, transcend them, fight with them, or bypass them. It is a way to change your relationship with your challenging realities and meet them from Home. It is to help us become aware of our exilic experiences while remembering our true Home.
I'm Somaiyeh Hanaee — founder of Homed Exile Ltd, and someone who has lived the questions this practice is built around. My path here began with a quest to belong, which led me first into a PhD in an interdisciplinary field of Studies of Exile, and then into more than a decade of corporate life, before contemplative practice became the thread that tied it all together.
I bring over a decade of experience in the corporate world alongside my training as a mindfulness teacher, which is why Homed Exile speaks to both individuals and organisations — the same practice that steadies a person also steadies a team.
Through my corporate experience, I was exposed to the unnecessary costs, tensions, and grievances that can arise when people are stressed, distracted, or operating without space to pause and reflect. This experience made me realise how much could be prevented or transformed through access to collective wisdom, focused minds, and compassion.
For organisations, this means creating the conditions for people to think more clearly, communicate more consciously, navigate challenges with greater resilience, and build healthier working relationships. Because when individuals become more aware of themselves and their responses, the quality of how they lead, communicate, and work together changes too.
From a very young age, I became aware that I did not comfortably belong either to my family or to the country. I felt like a mismatch, born to the wrong family or into the wrong society. I was yearning for a permanent home to feel safe at and to belong to. That quest led me to pursue a PhD in Studies of Exile. The insights I gained about the concepts of home and exile led me to ancient contemplative teachings and practices. I subsequently have been a meditator of over twelve years, attended dozens of guided and silent meditation and study retreats, trauma workshops guided by leading trauma experts and qualified as a mindfulness teacher.
During the years of my PhD, my thinking mind was trying to understand what the concepts of home and exile are, and how they are perceived. At the time, my understanding of exile was largely limited to its socio-political meaning. As someone who chose self-imposed exile because of the Islamic Republic regime, I understood exile primarily as displacement from one's homeland, and home as the country where one belongs.
But over time, both concepts deepened. I began to realise that exile is not only geographical or political — it is an unsettling yearning to belong. And I began to realise that Home, too, is something deeper than a place. It is Being.
The qualities, stories, thoughts, tragedies, achievements, failures, and losses that seemed to define me were all appearing within an open space of awareness. In the reality where exile is experienced, I introduce myself by a certain name, having a certain age, from a named land, born into a household with certain qualities. But in truth, where Home is, all I can truly say is: I Am.
The more I remembered to stay at Home, the more experiences of exile lost their grip. The stories did not disappear — I still play the roles — but being aware of them makes the roles more playful, lighter, impersonal: real but untrue, and childlike. The more often we remember that, in truth, we are not our roles, the more our relationship to our stories changes. We begin to meet life with inner belonging, peace, compassion, and resilience. Our exilic experiences remain real, but they are no longer the whole story.
Stress, distraction, physical/mental fatigue and unspoken tension carry real costs. Over a decade of experience in the corporate world, alongside my expertise in Studies of Exile and the nuances of the sense of belonging, with over twelve years of personal contemplative study and practice, shape these sessions. It is especially relevant for teams affected by change, relocation, global working, or cultural transition.
